Sep 3, 2010 - @lobster9207 actually spain forged swords of such high quality that some samuri used them
not allot though maybe 5%
and fencing swords are just a deadly as katana, and claymores are better, and Kukri put most swords to shame. and the Norse had better Damascus than the japanese
budzas Says:
Aug 27, 2010 - Well there is still one sabre that is better than this one. Late Hussar sabre (aka black sabre), But it was not standarised.
Tiwaz81 Says:
Aug 23, 2010 - @hunkyzombie
mainly to be used on fleeing infantry men.

Aug 21, 2010 - Ultimate cutting weapon? In german or english sabre? Lol. He's delusional. Should have a look on 17th century central and eastern european ones
hunkyzombie Says:
Aug 14, 2010 - To my knowledge, this sword was never really intended for use as a fencing weapon.. all the weight is on the blade, so it's no where near as fast as a weapon balanced on the hilt.
Sabers were just designed to be swung, really hard, from the back of a galloping horse. Even when practising with a saber on foot, the traditional pose was to have one's off hand resting on your belt, to replicate holding the reigns on a horse.

attackoftherandom Says:
Aug 4, 2010 - @nivarion well damascus steel can be stronger than any normal high carbon steel.
nivarion Says:
Aug 4, 2010 - @attackoftherandom That it comes out of a sand is one of the things going against it. The steel has a very high silica content that can make it brittle. That's the whole reason of the folding. They'd have to get the little bit of quality steel they'd get out of there to last, so they'd fold it with the bad stuff until they got something usable. All swords forged with a bloom furnace had to do this, all over the world. It was just one of their problems.
attackoftherandom Says:
Aug 3, 2010 - @nivarion well katanas were made of a special steel found in japan and was made by melting down black sand.
attackoftherandom Says:
Aug 3, 2010 - @Ranziel1 you apparently dont know much about swordsmanship.
nivarion Says:
Jul 30, 2010 - @lobster9207 Hell, a good sabre from the west was better than the best samurai swords. The reason being the Japanese use a technology to get their steel that the Europeans abandoned in the middle ages.
So not only does it have the same cutting power, its better steel so it lasts longer too.
And besides, you don't need to be able to cut through four people in a row. You only need to cut far enough to kill them.

Jul 22, 2010 - @lobster9207 if u notice, a sabre is just like a katana, a katana with its tip broken off which is smaller but faster is just like the cutlass, the cutlass is just like a sabre but faster and saller and could easily get to closer combat. cutlass is better but it was actually also used for a weapon just in case a captain needed to defend himself from invaders such as pirates or during war.
lobster9207 Says:
Jul 22, 2010 - @copypacercopypacer ah i see.. the translation is the problem. i always thought a cutlass is just a machete, which is in fact not made for killing (which naturally doesnt mean that it has never been used to do so, but thats a different story). obviously a cutless is what pirates used to take with them for entering ships... i see... well it sure is a frightening weapon
copypacercopypacer Says:
Jul 21, 2010 - @lobster9207 it is supposed to kill people, they didn't just use it to hack ropes, it was also used for practice fencing and it was make for a side arm just in case their are any raiders or pirates.
lobster9207 Says:
Jul 21, 2010 - @copypacercopypacer no i didnt know that. but thats intresting, in particular since a cutlass isnt supposed to kill people... or am i wrong?
copypacercopypacer Says:
Jul 21, 2010 - @lobster9207 you do know that the cutlass was proofen to be 50 times better than the katana, longsword, sabre, and rapier.

Jastrzab78 Says:
Jun 22, 2010 - A samurai katana were chipped from hundreds of layers which does not provide a quality blade only material used. Japanese iron ore was of lower quality than that used in Europe because he had a blacksmith forge steel for longer (to extract carbon from iron particles). This caused more harm than good because the technological process was time consuming and thus expensive and not everyone could afford. And when I bought it to highlight the status and not fight.
